The Roman church
The Roman church « Notre Dame de la Nativité » was built in the XIIth century probably on the very site of a Carolingian edifice from the IXth – Xth centuries.
Originally a Roman church, it was then restored and transformed many times.
It was abandoned and partially destroyed at the end of the Middle Ages (XIIIth XIVth centuries ) to expand the safer Saint-Pierre church (present clock), owing to its “ intra muros ” location. It was rebuilt in the middle of the XVth century, in 1464.
In 1793, its roof was badly damaged and the parish priest was ready to forbid the church and urged the community to react; hence the nave vault was rebuilt with free stones to replace the wooden frame.
In 1810, its frontwall was rebuilt and in 1849: reconstruction of the bell tower arch.
In 1983, its restoration was achieved thanks to a legacy and a subscription organized by « the association for the church restoration ».
Among the chapels which compose this edifice, the Rosary chapel and its square plan is outstanding for its decorations, its sculpted panellings achieved in 1690, its golden wood altar from the XVIIIth century, its ceiling octagonal, its statue representing the Holy Virgin in gilded wood...
